The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is the only museum where visitors can explore a legendary aircraft carrier, the first space shuttle, the world's fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. We thrill visitors of all ages and connect them to history through hands-on exploration, stories of heroism and firsthand accounts of people who were there. As New York City's only educational institution housed on an aircraft carrier, we're advancing innovation by developing the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering and math.

Hangar Deck: Intrepid’s Hangar Deck exhibition space is unique among historic ships. Visitors can follow the deck’s two separate paths: explore Intrepid’s technology on the port (left) side and celebrate the people who lived and worked on the ship on the starboard (right) side. The Museum’s permanent exhibition brings to life the powerful history of the aircraft carrier. Examine original artifacts, view historic video footage, and explore interactive exhibits that trace Intrepid’s Navy career from 1943 to the present. The Special Exhibition Gallery, also located on the Hangar Deck, features temporary exhibitions.

Flight Deck: From here, Intrepid launched the propeller-driven planes that helped defeat Japan during World War II, the jets that supported U.S. ground forces in Vietnam, and the helicopters that recovered NASA astronauts in the 1960s. It was also here that Japanese kamikaze suicide planes hit, exacting their terrible toll upon Intrepid’s crew. Today, the Flight Deck holds most of Intrepid’s collection of authentically restored aircraft, and the new home of the space shuttle Enterprise. Opening on July 19, 2012, the Space Shuttle Pavilion will provide guests with a look back at NASA’s space program and inspire tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, and mathematicians to keep dreaming.

Gallery and Third Deck: Newly restored spaces on the Third Deck reveal daily life for the ship’s enlisted sailors. On the Gallery Deck, visitors can view a ready room where pilots received their last instructions before taking off. In the nearby Combat Information Center (CIC), crew members tracked nearby ships and aircraft — friend and foe.

Growler Submarine: The former USS Growler first opened at the Intrepid Museum in 1989 and is the only American diesel-powered strategic missile submarine open to the public. The Growler offers museum visitors a firsthand look at life aboard a submarine and a close-up inspection of the once “top-secret” missile command center. Access is available to the various compartments as they were used during operations.

General Admission grants access to Intrepid Aircraft Carrier, Space Shuttle Pavilion, 28 Restored Aircraft, Growler Submarine and 2 free films (“The Story of Intrepid” and “Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light").

Hours of operation

Open daily, 10:00am-5:00pm; Extended hours on Saturday, Sunday & Holidays 10:00am-6:00pm during April-October only. Final Entry is one hour prior to closing. Closed: Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Approximately 2-3 hours to allow for the full Intrepid Experience.

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is located on the West side of Manhattan at Pier 86, West 46th Street and 12th Avenue.

Participant restriction

Children 4 years of age and under are admitted Free of charge.

Guests under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
