Follow in the footsteps of one of Poland’s most famous people, Pope John Paul II. See where the journey started for the man who became the first non-Italian Pope in more than 450 years. Sites include the Sanctuary, the Lagiewniki district and more. Karol Wojtyla, regarded as the greatest Pole of the 20th century, was the first non-Italian since 1523 to become Pope of the Catholic Church when he assumed the role in 1978. He was acclaimed as one of the greatest leaders of his time and visited 129 countries during his pontificate, and on this tour you'll get to follow in his footsteps. Visit the town of Wadowice, where John Paul II was born and grew up. See the Pope’s house and the Basilica, and taste the famous cream cakes of Wadowice. Another place of interest is the Sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, founded in the early 17th century. In 1999, it was designated as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Sanctuary is comprised of a Baroque Basilica with ‘The Lady of Kalwaria’ miraculous image, a monastery, and a complex of churches and chapels. On this tour you’ll visit the Lagiewniki district, home of the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy, a tribute to the life of Saint Faustyna Kowalska. Since the 1940s, it has been a pilgrimage destination, visited both for the famous painting that depicts the Lord's Mercy, and the grave of Saint Faustyna.The excursion ends under the famous ‘Papal Window’ in the Archbishops' Palace in Krakow.
