Highlights / General details
Located nearby National Route number 9, from Yala, 130 kilometers from San Salvador de Jujuy we find Quebrada de Humahuaca. This 150 kilometer wide Andean valley flanked by two tall mountain chains is continually dredged deeper by the Rio Grande River. Humahuaca, standing at an altitude of 2,000 meters (6,561 feet) is the gem of the Jujuy province.
The city, which is comprised of several small towns, you will find that most still hold strong to their rich ancestral roots. Visitors will learn all about the history and traditions of these peoples who are said to have one of the most unique cultural landscapes in the world. To this day, the people of these indigenous towns conserve their own religious beliefs, rites, celebrations, art, agriculture, music and techniques as they were handed down to them over many generations. In recognition of this rich patrimony, UNESCO declared the city a World Heritage Site in 2003.
Locals are mainly of the “coya” indigenous ethnic group. Quebrada de Humahuaca has been the scene of many very different ancestral cultures since antiquity, 10,000 years ago. Among them, another indigenous group called the “omaguacas” gave the city its name. During the 16th century, it served as a gateway for Spanish conquerors travelling into Argentina from Peru. As Spanish influences blended into the indigenous culture, each of the towns comprising the city developed their own distinct character. For this reason, “cultural tourism" has become quite popular.
