Highlights / General details
Located 23 kilometers north of Belo Horizonte and founded in 1711, Sábará was the first major gold mining center in Minas Gerais state, at its peak becoming one of the world's wealthiest towns. This is reflected in its houses, mansions, churches, statues, fountains and collection of sacred art. Sabará once produced more gold in one week than the rest of Brazil produced in an entire year!
Among the sites visited in this fascinating town are the church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, with sculptures and engravings by the famous sculptor, Aleijadinho; the Museu do Ouro (Gold Museum), housed in an old gold foundry (1730) with a collection of scale models of gold mines; and the Teatro Imperial (1770). The theatre is a former opera house with crystal chandeliers and three rows of seats in carved wood and bamboo. You'll also visit the chapel of Nossa Senhora de Ó, whose entire ceiling and walls are covered with woodcarvings, gold leaf and darkly mysterious paintings that depict Bible stories, using Chinese techniques and sculptures.
