Highlights / General details
The Recife visit includes historical Recife Antigo, the original port area now undergoing restoration and enhancement, with stops at Marco Zero and Rua do Bom Jesus, formerly Jews' Street, the original site of the first synagogue in the Americas, now a Jewish museum. The tour proceeds to Praça da Republica, flanked by the Law Courts, Governor's Palace and Santa Isabel Theatre, and the hidden treasure of Capela Dourada, a gilt-clad church with paintings depicting virtues, saints and martyrs against a backdrop of Portuguese tiles. The Olinda tour includes the Convent of Saint Francis, the Igreja da Sé (the cathedral and first parish church in Northeast Brazil), the former slave market, and the beautiful Mosteiro de São Bento, built in 1582 and lavishly decorated with gold and fine woodcarvings.
