Highlights / General details
The slave trade of the 18th and 19th centuries brought huge numbers of African slaves to Northeast Brazil, mainly as laborers for the growing sugar industry. This influx had enormous repercussions on the development of local culture, especially in Bahia, where the majority of the imported slaves were concentrated. After the abolition of slavery, most slaves remained in Bahia, and their cultural and religious practices contributed to Brazil's unique multicultural flavor. In order to see something of this Afro-Brazilian heritage, the tour starts with a visit to the Orixá community at Tororó Dam, followed by a stop at the Terreiro Ilê Apo Ofonjá, a place where Candomblé celebrations are usually held once or twice a week in the evening.
