This private guided tour departs from hotels on the Brazilian side. Not far from spectacular Iguaçu Falls, the Brazilians have created their own miracle: Itaipú Hydroelectric Power Plant, the world's single largest power station. Situated on the Paraná River bordering Brazil and Paraguay, the plant took eighteen years to build, at a cost of around US$18 billion. Its eight-kilometer span currently contains nineteen 700 megawatt turbines that generate 76 billon kilowatt hours of power per year, but once the installation of the twentieth turbine is concluded, output will increase to a phenomenal 14,000 megawatts.

Serving 10 Brazilian states, including the Federal District of Brasília, and Paraguay, the plant generates more than 26% of the electrical power generated in Brazil, and 20.6% of that produced in the MERCOSUL countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Bolivia). In addition to becoming a tourist attraction in its own right, the dam led to the construction of the town of Foz do Iguaçu, which flourishes due to tourism and trade with neighboring countries. Starting at the reception center, a video presentation shows the different stages of construction and explains how this extraordinary feat of engineering operates, after which you visit the main observatory to see the impressive spectacle and a panorama of the plant.
