Focused on central Recife, whose islands, rivers and bridges have inspired the name Brazilian Venice, this tour starts at Praça da Republica, a square flanked by fine buildings: the Law Courts, Governor's Palace and Santa Isabel Theatre. A few steps away lies the hidden treasure of Capela Dourada, a gilt-clad church with paintings that depict virtues, saints and martyrs against a backdrop of Portuguese tiles.

The tour proceeds to Praça do Carmo, its church and convent of the same name and Patio de São Pedro, a traffic-free square lined with bars, restaurants and brightly painted 19th century houses, all overlooked by the Concatedral de São Pedro dos Clerigos, an 18th century Baroque church with fine wood carvings. After São José Market comes Forte das Cinco Pontas, built on the site of the 1630 Dutch fortress, where the City Museum shows Recife's history and culture.

The tour returns to the city's origins in Recife Antigo, the port area now undergoing restoration and enhancement. Part of this district was founded by the Dutch, the narrow, four-storey townhouses resembling those of Amsterdam. Rua do Bom Jesus, formerly Jews' Street, is the location of the first synagogue in the Americas, now a Jewish museum. Nearby, the broad quayside square of Marco Zero marks the starting point of both Recife and Pernambuco State. Port warehouses have been converted into a restaurant complex, a craft centre and two museums: Cais do Sertão, an innovative insight into the rich culture of the state's dry backlands; and Paço do Frevo, which explains the history and features of Recife's unique carnival dance.
