Highlights / General details
Porto de Galinhas (Hen's Harbour), a fishing village 70 kilometers south of Recife that kept on as a clandestine hang-out for slave traffickers up to the years following the abolition of slavery in 1888. On hearing that "hens" (the secret code word for slaves) had arrived, the slave traders of Recife knew to expect a profitable shipload of slaves. On the road to Porto de Galinhas we drive past sugarcane plantations, coconut farms and marshlands. On arrival you are welcomed by a series of beautiful beaches that can be reached on foot or by beach-buggy. At low tide, the coral reefs just off the beach form natural pools, and a jangada (regional fishing raft) ferries passengers across to bathe or snorkel among the colorful fish that populate the blue, crystal-clear waters. Porto de Galinhas has a lively town center with plenty of gift shops, bars and restaurants, many of which have wonderful sea views, such as the one where lunch is served.
