The first buildings were constructed between 1956 and 1960, during the government of President Juscelino Kubitschek, whose tomb and personal belongings are housed in the JK Memorial that was built to honor him. The layout of the city - the Plano Piloto (Pilot Plan) - was conceived by urban planner Lucio Costa; when seen from above this has been variously described as having the shape of a bow and arrow, a bird in flight or an airplane.

Although it was planned for only 500,000 inhabitants, the city has grown rapidly to have a population of over two million, and over the years several satellite towns have been built to house the additional inhabitants. The tour includes the Alvorada Palace (1958), the first public building to be opened in Brasília and the official residence of the President, and Itamaraty Palace, the headquarters of Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This building incorporates unusual features such as marble walls by Athos Bulcão; works depicting Brazil in previous centuries by foreign artists such as Frans Post, Jean-Baptiste Debret and Rugendas; and a large collection of art works by Brazilian artists.

From here the tour continues to the Temple of Boa Vontade (Goodwill), which resembles a pyramid, and the Dom Bosco Sanctuary, which is decorated with Belgian blue and violet stained-glass windows, and whose engraved bronze doors feature religious themes. One of the highlights of the tour is the TV Tower, whose 75 meter-high observation deck affords a panoramic view of the city. At the foot of the tower are the Gem Museum and the largest market in town. Lunch is included.
